Duties & Responsibilities of Laboratory Director

To ensure that the lab activities conform to the International standard ISO 15189:2022 and the laid down managerial & examination procedures, a nodal post called Laboratory director has been created. Prof (Dr) Hariom Sharma has been assigned this responsibility. The laboratory director himself is Associate Professor of Biochemistry and actively serves professional, scientific, advisory, organizational, administrative and educational matter related responsibilities relevant to services offered by the laboratory. He is, thus, responsible for

  • Providing effective leadership to the medical laboratory services, including budget planning, financial management, identification of needed resources, and for ensuring its fulfillment by the management and to manage contingency so that essential services are maintained during emergency.
  • Relating and functioning effectively with applicable accrediting and regulatory agency (NABL), appropriate administrative officials, the healthcare community, and the patient population served, and providers of formal agreements, as and when required.
  • Ensuring that there are appropriate numbers of staff with the required education, training and competence to provide medical laboratory services that meet the needs and requirements of the users.
  • Ensuring the implementation of the quality policy.
  • Implementing a safe laboratory environment in accordance with good practices and applicable requirements.
  • Serving as a contributing member in providing available facilities.
  • Ensuring the provision of clinical advice with respect to the choice of examination, use of services and interpretation of examination results.
  • Selecting and monitoring laboratory suppliers.
  • Selecting referral laboratories and monitoring the quality of their services.
  • Arranging professional development programs for laboratory staff and opportunities to participate in scientific programmes e.g. conferences, symposia, workshops and other activities of professional laboratory organizations to upgrade their knowledge.
  • Defining, implementing and monitoring of standards of performance and quality improvement of the laboratory services.
  • Monitoring of all the work performed in the laboratory to determine that clinically relevant information is generated.
  • Addressing complaints, requests or suggestions from staff and users of laboratory services
  • Designing and implementing contingency plans to ensure that essential services are available during emergency situations or other conditions when laboratory services are limited or unavailable.
  • Planning and directing research and development, wherever appropriate.
